The Great Depression of the 1930ś “All good things must come to an end” This is a quote from Geoffrey Chaucer who was an english poet. This quote can relate to The Great Depression because as it says all good thing must come to an end and the “roaring 20ś” was that good thing. The good thing ended and the bad thing came The Great Depression. The Great Depression was a terrible time in which Black Tuesday, The Dust Bowl and the unemployment rates that skyrocketed. The day known as Black Tuesday is what started The Great Depression. According to History.com “On October 19,1929 investors traded some 16 million shares, Billions of dollars were lost wiping out thousands of investors.” This was just one of the events that happened on this day. With this so many people lost a lot of their life saving if not all. Considering that the stock market is where a lot of people put their money, it caused a major problem when this happened. History.com has also stated “ Stocks in 1932 were only worth 20% of their value in the summer of 1929.” This pretty much means that because of all the stocks that were lost and the crashing of the stock market the amount that the stocks were worth drastically went down. And finally History.com stated that “People would buy stocks that they didn't have money to buy.” Which means that when the markets priced went down the loners called the money back from the people who did this. This caused people to go bankrupt and for some to even kill themselves. This shows how the Black Tuesday was one of the most devastating things that happened and part of what made the 1930ś such a terrible time.
The Great Depression not only brought Black Tuesday but during this time another horrible event started known as The Dust Bowl. According to Soft School “The ecology and agriculture in the Canadian Parties and the United States was damaged severely.” This quote gives some background to how the Dust Bowl was caused. For around ten years the topsoil was plowed enough to destroy deep rooted grasses that would trap the soil and moisture even during a drought. The people destroy those grasses and then when the drought came it brought the soil to be dry. This allowed the winds to carry the dust from the soil around to make the Dust Bowl. Also the Dust Bowl destroyed millions of acres and resulted in forcing 10ś of thousands of families to abandon their homes. This shows just how bad and devastating this event was considering so many people were suffering from the events of black tuesday and the stocks of just about everything going down. The people who lost everything had it so much harder than some of the others. That is how the Dust Bowl was one of the most devastating things that happened and part of what made the 1930ś such a terrible time.
The 1930ś also had Unemployment rates that skyrocketed. The unemployment rates reached 25% in 1933 when at its peak. This means that one fourth of the entire country was out of work. Also over 11 million people were unemployed in 1935. This shows just for lack of a shear percent there was still a huge amount still unemployed. This would continue like this with many being unemployed for years to come. Finally many of the unemployed lived in Hoovervilles and shanty towns. They did this expecting protection or help from President Hoover. But in reality they didn't get much of anything from him.
In conclusion the 1930’s was a terrible time that involved Black Tuesday, The disaster that was The Dust Bowl, and the unemployment rates. The 1930 just in general was the time where good things had to end. The 1930s was that end. It brought so much pain to the people of that time. Some committed suicide some went and starved. Overall though the 1930’s was a terrible time that seems to be a time that caused a lot of pain and suffering.
